Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
People live in three main kinds of communities. An urban community is a city – crowded, with tall buildings and busy streets. A suburban community is near a city, with houses and yards and shopping centers. A rural community is in the country, with farms, fields, and few people spread far apart. This worksheet teaches students to tell the three apart by population and land.
Section A gives eight descriptions (skyscrapers and crowded subways; quiet farms and open fields; a neighborhood of houses near a big city) and asks students to label each urban, suburban, or rural. The reference box teaches the three types and their clues but uses different descriptions than the items.
Section B is short-answer. Students contrast urban and rural, define suburban, name something seen in a city, explain why rural areas have fewer people, identify their own community type, and name a rural job. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds geography and community understanding.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and compare pictures of a city, a suburb, and a farm.
Complete Section A independently – have students look at how many people and how much open land each has.
Discuss Section B item 13 (students’ own community type) as a class.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Communities Worksheet or the Map Skills Worksheet for a community mini-unit.
