About this worksheet
A community helper is a person whose job helps keep a community safe, healthy, and running well. Police officers, doctors, teachers, librarians, and many others help us every day. This worksheet helps young students connect each community helper to the work they do.
Section A on page 1 gives eight clues – a helper with a badge who keeps people safe, a helper who cleans teeth, a helper who drives the school bus, and more – and asks students to name the community helper. The reference box teaches the idea with a crossing guard and a mail carrier, which are not used in any item.
Section B on page 2 asks what a community helper is, names two helpers and how they help, asks who to call for a fire, and explains why community helpers matter. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds toward citizenship and community life.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and ask students which helpers they have met.
Complete Section A independently – have students picture each helper at work.
Discuss how different helpers keep the community safe, healthy, and learning.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.
Pair with the Communities Worksheet or the Rules and Responsibilities Worksheet.
