About this worksheet

Every person lives in a community — a place where people share space, services, and daily life. This worksheet introduces the three main community types: urban (large cities), suburban (smaller towns near a city), and rural (countryside and farm areas).

Section A asks students to classify 10 places or features as urban, suburban, or rural. Items include apartment buildings, cornfields, subway stations, subdivision streets, and sports arenas — a mix broad enough to build real category knowledge.

Section B deepens understanding with 6 short-answer questions. Students compare how communities are similar, explain why rural areas have fewer stores, identify jobs unique to rural settings, and name services all communities share. Page 3 is the answer key.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and ask students to name a feature of the community type where they live.

Complete Section A independently — pause to discuss any borderline item (e.g. a flower garden on a homestead).

Work through Section B as a class or in pairs before students write individual answers.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.

Pair with the Map Skills Worksheet to extend community learning to geography.
