Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Places fit inside one another from small to large: a city sits inside a state, and every state is part of a country, the largest of the three. Understanding this hierarchy helps young students make sense of where they live and how maps are organized. This worksheet gives them practice sorting real places.

Section A lists eight places (Chicago, Texas, Canada, Boston) and asks students to label each a city, a state, or a country. The reference box teaches the idea with Denver, Colorado, the United States, and Japan, places not reused in the items.

Section B asks students to contrast a city and a country, name the largest of the three, identify their own city, state, and country, and tell which fits inside which. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds toward map skills and understanding government.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and draw nested boxes (city inside state inside country) on the board.

Complete Section A independently – have students picture each place on a map.

Work Section B item 11 together: name your own city, state, and country.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.

Pair with the US States and Capitals Worksheet or the Continents and Oceans Worksheet for a geography mini-unit.
