About this worksheet
Historians ask why events happen and what follows from them. A cause is the reason something happens and comes first; an effect is what happens as a result and comes after. Many historical events have more than one cause and more than one effect. This worksheet teaches students to apply cause-and-effect thinking to history rather than just to stories.
Section A gives eight statements in cause-effect pairs (a drought dried the crops; many families had little food) with a short parenthetical hint, and students label each cause or effect, balanced four and four. The reference box teaches the skill with a heavy-rain-and-flood example and lists signal words but uses none of the Section A situations.
Section B is short-answer. Students contrast cause and effect, say which comes first, name signal words, analyze a flood-and-move pair, explain why one event can have many effects, and give a cause and effect from their own week. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill is essential for understanding history and reading nonfiction.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and walk through the rain-flood-move chain together.
Complete Section A independently – have students use the parenthetical hint to decide cause or effect.
Discuss Section B item 12 (the flood-and-move pair) to model naming both parts.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
