Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

The U.S. government is built on a simple idea: power is shared by three branches so that no single person or group holds it all. This worksheet introduces that idea in a way upper-elementary students can use.

Section A asks students to classify 10 items — including the Senate, the President, the Supreme Court, the Cabinet, the Capitol building, and the White House — as legislative, executive, or judicial. The mix builds recall for the three branches without relying on definitions.

Section B is short-answer. Students explain why power was divided, identify which branch reviews laws against the Constitution, name the two parts of Congress, and give one example of a check (such as a presidential veto). Page 3 is the answer key. Content is civic and non-partisan; no current politicians are named.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and pause on the phrase ‘separation of powers’ so students hear the key term.

Complete Section A independently — encourage students to whisper-read each item before writing the branch name.

Pause before Section B to remind students that ‘check’ here means a way one branch can limit another, not a checkmark.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.

Pair with the U.S. Symbols Worksheet or the Rules and Responsibilities Worksheet to build a short civics mini-unit.
