Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Geographers name bodies of water by their size, shape, flow, and whether the water is salt or fresh. An ocean is huge salt water; a lake is fresh water surrounded by land; a river flows in one direction; a pond is small and still; a bay is part of an ocean that curves into the land; and a stream is a narrow flow that feeds a river. This worksheet teaches those types and the clues that tell them apart.

Section A gives eight clues (a huge body of salt water, fresh water with land all around, a large flow toward the sea, and so on) and asks students to name the body of water each describes. Because the clues describe traits rather than repeating the reference word for word, students reason from the features. The reference box defines each water type but does not reuse the Section A clue wording as answers.

Section B is short-answer on page 2. Students contrast an ocean and a lake, distinguish a river from a pond, name clues that separate water bodies, identify a coastal bay, and reason about why towns grow beside rivers. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill complements landforms and continents-and-oceans study.

For younger students, the 2nd Grade Bodies of Water Worksheet covers the same topic in short, simple sentences for grade 2.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and ask students for one real example of each water type.

Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘salt or fresh? flowing or still? how big?’

Discuss Section B item 12 (a coastal bay) to reinforce the bay definition.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.

Pair with the Landforms Worksheet or the Continents and Oceans Worksheet for a geography mini-unit.
