About this worksheet
This is a full state study rather than a list of symbols. Students follow Arkansas from the Quapaw, Osage, and Caddo through Hernando de Soto’s crossing in 1541, the founding of Arkansas Post in 1686, the Louisiana Purchase, statehood in 1836, the Civil War, segregation, and the industry that finally arrived in the 1960s.
Two moments carry the lesson. In 1836 Arkansas entered the Union as a slave state paired with Michigan as a free one, which shows students exactly how the balance in Congress worked. And in 1957 nine African American students enrolled at Central High School in Little Rock, the governor sent the National Guard to keep them out, and the president sent U.S. Army soldiers to walk them in.
The passage is also careful about a claim students often meet: the land bought in the Louisiana Purchase was not empty. The Quapaw, Osage, and Caddo were living there and were pressed by treaty to give it up, and the Trail of Tears crossed Arkansas in the 1830s.
Section A asks students to circle the best answer to four multiple choice questions. Section B asks students to write TRUE or FALSE for six statements about the passage. Section C asks students to fill in six missing words. A complete answer key is included on page 3.
