About this worksheet
Ancient Rome began as a small city in Italy and grew into a huge empire around the Mediterranean. Rome was first a republic, where citizens elected representatives, and later an empire led by an emperor. The Romans were famous builders of roads, aqueducts, and the Colosseum. This worksheet helps students name these governments, leaders, and structures.
Section A on page 1 gives eight clues, and students write the term each one describes. The reference box explains empire and republic, the emperor and Senate, aqueducts, roads, the Colosseum, and Latin.
Section B on page 2 asks how the republic and empire differed, why roads and aqueducts mattered, what the Senate was, and what Roman ideas still affect us. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The worksheet pairs well with the Ancient Greece and Ancient Civilizations worksheets.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and trace how Rome grew from a city to an empire.
Complete Section A independently – have students match each clue to one term.
Discuss how a republic differs from rule by a single emperor.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.
Pair with the Ancient Greece Worksheet or the Ancient Civilizations Worksheet.
