Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Ancient Greece was not one country but many independent city-states around the Mediterranean Sea. Athens became famous for art, learning, and an early form of democracy, while Sparta was known for its strong army. The Greeks also gave us philosophers, the Olympic Games, and famous myths. This worksheet helps students name these key ideas and people.

Section A on page 1 gives eight clues, and students write the term each one describes. The reference box explains city-states, democracy, Athens and Sparta, philosophers, the Olympics, and myths.

Section B on page 2 asks what a city-state was, how Athens differed from a place ruled by a king, why Greek philosophers are remembered, and which Greek ideas we still use. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The worksheet pairs well with the Ancient Egypt and Ancient Civilizations worksheets.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and locate Greece on a map of the Mediterranean.

Complete Section A independently – have students match each clue to one term.

Discuss how Athenian democracy compares with government today.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.

Pair with the Ancient Egypt Worksheet or the Ancient Civilizations Worksheet.
