Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Ancient Egypt was one of the world’s earliest civilizations, built along the Nile River in northern Africa. The Nile’s yearly flood left rich soil that made farming possible in the desert, and the Egyptians are remembered for pharaohs, pyramids, hieroglyphics, and mummies. This worksheet helps students learn these key features.

Section A on page 1 gives eight clues, and students write the term each one describes, such as the Nile River, pharaoh, pyramid, and papyrus. The reference box explains the role of the Nile and the famous features of Egypt so students have the information they need to match.

Section B on page 2 asks why the Nile was important, what a pharaoh was, why pyramids were built, and how the Egyptians wrote. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds on the study of ancient civilizations.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and find the Nile River on a map.

Complete Section A independently – have students match each clue to one term.

Discuss how the Nile shaped daily life in ancient Egypt.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.

Pair with the Ancient Civilizations Worksheet or the Continents and Oceans Worksheet.
