About this worksheet
Thousands of years ago, several great civilizations grew up around the world. Egypt rose along the Nile, Greece gave us democracy, Rome built a vast empire, Mesopotamia is called the cradle of civilization, and China built the Great Wall. This worksheet helps students recognize each civilization by its achievements.
Section A on page 1 gives eight clues – hieroglyphics and pyramids, the first Olympics, the Colosseum, cuneiform writing, paper and silk, and more – and asks students to name the civilization. The reference box introduces each civilization by its river or rulers, so the clues are not reused.
Section B on page 2 asks what a civilization is, names two civilizations and their achievements, explains why rivers mattered, and invites a personal choice. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds toward world history and geography.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and locate each civilization on a world map.
Complete Section A independently – have students match each achievement to a civilization.
