About this worksheet
Weather is one of the few science topics every student already cares about — it tells them whether recess is outside today. This worksheet starts there and builds toward the vocabulary teachers need students to own: precipitation, temperature, wind, climate, forecasting.
Section A gives 8 short descriptions and asks students to name the weather (blizzard, drizzle, fog, thunderstorm, tornado, hail, drought, sleet). The descriptions are written so the distinguishing detail is in the wording, not in a picture, which means no diagrams are needed on the student page.
Section B introduces four basic instruments — thermometer, rain gauge, anemometer, weather vane — and asks students to explain the difference between weather and climate. The reference box at the top of page 1 names the four weather elements and lists each instrument. Page 3 is a single-column answer key sized for the longer free-response answers.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and ask students to describe today’s weather using two of the four elements (temperature, precipitation, wind, clouds).
Work Section A independently and pause to discuss the difference between drizzle and a thunderstorm.
Move to Section B and have students sketch each instrument as a quick extension.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or aide spot-check.
Pair with the States of Matter Worksheet (water vapor connection) to build cross-topic understanding.
