Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Meteorologists are scientists who study the weather, and they use special tools to measure it. A thermometer measures temperature, an anemometer measures wind speed, a wind vane shows wind direction, a rain gauge measures rainfall, a barometer measures air pressure, and a hygrometer measures humidity. This worksheet helps students learn which tool does each job, a foundational idea in earth science.

Section A gives eight prompts that ask students to fill in either the measurement a tool takes or the tool that takes a measurement. Because this is a recall worksheet, the reference box names each tool first; the items then check that students remember which instrument matches which weather condition.

Section B asks students to explain what a thermometer measures, choose the two tools a pilot needs for wind, say why a rain gauge helps a farmer, and define a meteorologist. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds toward reading weather data and understanding forecasts.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and point to each tool name and what it measures.

Complete Section A independently – have students fill in the tool or the measurement.

Work Section B item 10 together: pick the two tools that measure wind speed and direction.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.

Pair with the Weather Worksheet or the Clouds and Precipitation Worksheet for an earth-science mini-unit.
