Weather Forecasting
Weather forecasting is the science of predicting atmospheric conditions at a specific place and time in the future. Meteorologists — scientists who study the atmosphere — use a wide variety of instruments and data sources to understand current weather conditions and project how they will change. Accurate weather forecasts save lives by providing early warning of dangerous storms, help farmers plan planting and harvesting, allow airlines to route around turbulence, and help utility companies prepare for demand spikes during heat waves or cold snaps. Despite its importance, forecasting remains challenging because the atmosphere is an enormously complex, chaotic system.
Surface weather observations form the foundation of forecasting. Weather stations around the world measure temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind speed and direction, and precipitation. Barometers measure atmospheric pressure — a falling barometer indicates that stormy weather is likely approaching, while a rising barometer suggests clearing conditions. Weather balloons called radiosondes are launched twice daily at hundreds of locations worldwide, carrying instruments that measure atmospheric conditions up to 100,000 feet as the balloons rise and eventually burst. This vertical profile of the atmosphere is essential for understanding how weather systems will develop.
Radar and satellites have revolutionized weather forecasting. Doppler radar can detect not only the location and intensity of precipitation but also the wind speed and direction within storms, allowing meteorologists to identify rotation inside thunderstorms that may produce tornadoes. Weather satellites orbiting Earth provide continuous images of cloud cover and atmospheric moisture from space. Geostationary satellites hover over a fixed point on the equator and provide rapid-update images every few minutes, allowing forecasters to track the movement and development of storms in near-real time.
Modern weather forecasting relies heavily on numerical weather prediction — the use of powerful computers to solve mathematical equations describing atmospheric physics. Forecasters enter current weather observations into computer models that simulate how the atmosphere will evolve over the next few hours, days, or weeks. Ensemble forecasting runs the same model dozens of times with slightly different starting conditions to account for uncertainty in observations; the spread of the ensemble gives forecasters a sense of forecast confidence. While a one-day forecast is now nearly as accurate as a two-day forecast was 20 years ago, forecasting beyond about ten days remains very challenging because small errors in initial conditions amplify over time.
