About this worksheet
Weather and climate are easy to mix up, but the difference is simple once it clicks: weather is what the air is doing right now, and climate is what the air usually does over many years. A single rainy afternoon is weather; a region that stays dry all year has a dry climate. Sorting out the two helps students read forecasts, understand seasons, and make sense of news about a changing planet.
Section A gives students 8 statements and asks them to label each one weather or climate. Section B asks four short-response questions: explain the difference, give fresh examples of each, decide whether a person moving to a new city should study weather or climate, and explain how two days can share a climate but have very different weather.
The reference box on page 1 defines weather and climate and offers a memory hook (‘weather is what you get today; climate is what you expect over a long time’). Section A is on page 1, Section B is on page 2, and page 3 is a complete answer key with the label for each Section A statement and sample answers for Section B.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and ask students to describe today’s weather, then the climate where they live.
Work Section A independently; remind students that words like ‘right now’ and ‘today’ signal weather, while ‘usually’ and ‘all year’ signal climate.
Move to Section B and discuss why packing for a whole year depends on climate, not one day’s weather.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or aide spot-check.
Pair with the Weather Worksheet or Seasons Worksheet for more earth-science practice.
