Tides Worksheet

About this worksheet
Tides are one of those everyday phenomena most kids have seen at a beach but cannot quite explain. This worksheet builds a simple model: the Moon’s gravity tugs on Earth’s oceans, the Sun’s gravity adds a smaller pull, and as Earth spins each coast moves through the resulting bulges and dips of water. Once that picture is in place, predicting what a beach will look like at low tide vs high tide becomes straightforward.
Section A is split. Items 1-2 ask students to read two short beach scenes (boats float level with the dock / crabs scurry across an exposed tide pool) and decide whether the scene shows HIGH TIDE or LOW TIDE. Items 3-8 switch to recall, prompting the student for the matching vocabulary term: tide, the Moon, gravity, two high tides, two low tides, and low tide. The mix lets students practice both apply and recall on the same model.
Section B opens up the reasoning on page 2. Students define a tide, name the Moon as the main cause, recall the about-two-per-day pattern, and predict one thing visible on the sand at low tide that would be underwater at high tide. The reference box at the top of page 1 teaches the model but does not write any of the Section A scene descriptions, so the worksheet stays reference-independent. Page 3 is a compact answer key.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box together; ask the class to describe what a high tide would look like at a familiar local beach before they start Section A.
Do Section A independently; review items 1-2 as a class so students can hear how scene details signal high tide or low tide.
For Section B item 4, accept any answer naming tide pools, shells, sand bars, or rocks revealed at low tide.
Pair with the Water Cycle Worksheet to connect the daily tide pattern to the broader movement of Earth’s water.
Use as a starting point for a coastal-ecosystems lesson or a vacation-week ocean unit.
