About this worksheet
The rock cycle is the slow, never-ending process that changes rocks from one type into another. Igneous rock forms when melted rock cools and hardens, sedimentary rock forms when layers of sediment are pressed together, and metamorphic rock forms when heat and pressure change an existing rock. This worksheet teaches students to identify each type by how it forms.
Section A gives eight formation clues (formed when lava cools quickly; pressed layers of sand and mud) and asks students to name the rock type. The reference box teaches the cycle with granite, sandstone, and marble, named rocks not reused in the items.
Section B asks students to list the three rock types, explain how igneous rock forms, name the two forces that make metamorphic rock, and explain why it is called a cycle. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill deepens Earth science.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and sketch the three rock types with arrows between them.
Complete Section A independently – have students match each clue to a formation process.
Work Section B item 9 together: list the three rock types as a class.
