Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

The muscular system is made of muscles that move the body by contracting. This worksheet teaches the main ideas – what a muscle is, how it contracts, and how tendons connect muscle to bone – along with the voluntary, involuntary, skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscle types.

Section A on page 1 gives eight clues, and students write the muscular-system term each one describes. The reference box names and explains each term, so students have what they need to match.

Section B on page 2 asks the main job of the muscular system, what it means for a muscle to contract, how voluntary and involuntary muscles differ, and why cardiac muscle matters. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The worksheet pairs well with the Nervous System and Skeleton and Bones worksheets.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and point out a voluntary and an involuntary muscle.

Complete Section A on page 1 – match each clue to one term.

Discuss how muscles work in pairs to move bones.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.

Pair with the Skeleton and Bones Worksheet or the Nervous System Worksheet.
