Taiga Biome
The taiga, also called the boreal forest, is the world’s largest land biome, forming a nearly continuous belt of coniferous forest across northern Canada, Alaska, Russia, and Scandinavia. It sits just south of the Arctic tundra and covers about 11 percent of Earth’s land surface — more than any other land biome. The taiga is characterized by long, bitterly cold winters, short cool summers, and moderate precipitation, mostly in the form of snow. Winters can last six to eight months, with temperatures regularly dropping below −40°F.
The dominant plants of the taiga are coniferous trees: spruce, fir, pine, and larch. These trees are well adapted to the harsh conditions. Their needle-like leaves have a thick waxy coating that prevents water loss and allows photosynthesis to continue even in cold temperatures. Their conical shape causes snow to slide off rather than accumulate and break branches. The dark color of their needles absorbs more sunlight. Most taiga conifers are evergreen, meaning they keep their needles year-round and can begin photosynthesizing as soon as temperatures rise, without waiting to grow new leaves.
Despite the cold, the taiga supports a rich array of wildlife. Moose, the largest member of the deer family, browse on aquatic plants and low shrubs. Wolves, bears, lynx, and wolverines are apex predators. Beavers build dams that create wetland habitats used by many other species. Millions of migratory songbirds breed in the taiga each summer, taking advantage of the long daylight hours and abundant insects. Year-round residents include snowshoe hares, whose population cycles boom and bust in sync with the lynx that hunt them, and red squirrels that cache spruce cones.
The taiga stores enormous amounts of carbon in its trees and soil, making it an important regulator of global climate. However, it faces serious threats. Large-scale logging removes mature forest, disrupting habitats and releasing stored carbon. Warming temperatures are causing more frequent wildfires, insect outbreaks, and permafrost thaw at the taiga’s northern edge. As the climate warms, the boreal forest is shifting northward while encroaching on tundra at one edge, and retreating before advancing deciduous forest at the other.
