Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

States of matter is one of the first physical-science ideas elementary students learn, and it sticks best when they can name everyday items as solids, liquids, or gases. This worksheet gives 12 quick classification items pulled from the classroom and kitchen — wooden pencil, milk in a glass, the air in a balloon — so students practice with familiar objects.

Section A drills the three categories without any tricky edge cases. Section B raises the difficulty by asking about changes of state: melting, boiling, and condensation. Students show they know which state changes shape but keeps fixed volume, which state spreads out to fill its container, and how to name each transition.

The reference box at the top of page 1 defines solid, liquid, and gas with model examples (ice cube, liquid water, water vapor). Page 2 is a compact two-column answer key for fast self-check or aide spot-check.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and have students name one solid, one liquid, and one gas they can see in the classroom.

Work Section A independently as a 3-5 minute warm-up.

Read item 13 together and discuss why a liquid keeps a fixed amount of space but takes the shape of its container.

Have students finish Section B and check answers against the page 2 key.

Pair with the Plant Life Cycle Worksheet or the Weather Worksheet to keep science content going.
