About this worksheet
A star is a giant ball of very hot gas that makes its own light and heat. Our Sun is a star – the closest to Earth, which is why it looks so big and bright, while other stars look like tiny dots because they are so far away. A constellation is a pattern people imagine by connecting stars, like the Big Dipper. This worksheet teaches what stars are and how people have used the night sky.
Section A gives eight true/false statements, mixing the correct facts (a star makes its own light; the Sun is a star; stars look small because they are far away) with errors (stars are actually tiny; stars make no light of their own). Students decide true or false. The reference box teaches the facts but phrases the statements differently.
Section B is short-answer. Students define a star, explain why the Sun looks bigger and brighter, define a constellation, and reason about why far-away stars look like tiny points. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill complements the solar system and moon phases.
