About this worksheet
The solar system is one of the first big-picture science topics students meet in elementary school, and the names of the eight planets are the part they remember longest. This worksheet pairs that planet-name recall with the key vocabulary that explains why a planet acts the way it does — star versus planet, planet versus moon, orbit, gravity, day, and year.
Section A focuses on planet identification: which planet is closest to the Sun, which is the largest, which planet has the bright rings, which planet is called the Red Planet, and what scientists call Pluto now that the planet count is eight. Section B steps back to core ideas — what an orbit is, what gravity does, why the Sun looks bigger than other stars, and the time scales of a day and a year on Earth.
The reference box at the top of page 1 defines star, planet, and moon at the concept level and mentions that Pluto is now classified as a dwarf planet. It does not list the eight planet names or any specific planet feature, so the assessed items measure recall and reasoning rather than copying from the reference. Page 3 is a compact two-column answer key for fast self-check or aide spot-check.
How to Use This Lesson
