About this worksheet
Soil is the loose top layer of ground where plants grow, made of broken rock, water, air, and humus. It forms in layers: humus on top, then topsoil where roots grow, then subsoil of clay and minerals, and bedrock at the bottom. This worksheet helps students picture and name each soil layer.
Section A on page 1 gives eight clues – the spongy leaf layer, the layer a gardener plants in, the hard rock at the bottom, and more – and asks students to write humus, topsoil, subsoil, or bedrock. The reference box also notes how soil layers differ from the Earth’s crust, mantle, and core.
Section B on page 2 asks what soil is made of, lists the layers in order, explains why topsoil matters, and contrasts soil layers with the Earth’s layers. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill connects to weathering, erosion, and plant growth.
