Snow
Snow is a type of precipitation that falls from clouds when temperatures are cold enough for water vapor to freeze into ice crystals. Each snowflake is made up of many tiny ice crystals that join together as they fall through the atmosphere.
No two snowflakes are exactly alike. As a snowflake falls, it passes through layers of air with different temperatures and humidity levels. These changing conditions cause each snowflake to develop its own unique six-sided shape.
When enough snow falls and accumulates on the ground, it can create a blizzard. Blizzards are severe snowstorms with strong winds and low visibility. They can make travel dangerous and shut down entire cities.
Snow serves an important role in nature. In mountainous regions, snowpack acts as a natural reservoir, storing water through winter and slowly releasing it in spring as it melts. This meltwater fills rivers and streams, supporting ecosystems and communities downstream.
Animals have developed many adaptations for surviving in snowy environments. Some animals, like bears, hibernate through the coldest months. Others, like snowshoe hares, change their fur color to white in winter for camouflage against the snow.
