About this worksheet
Your skeleton is the frame of about 206 bones inside your body. It does three big jobs: it supports your body and gives it shape, it protects soft organs, and it works with your muscles to let you move. Where two bones meet is a joint, which lets you bend. This worksheet teaches what bones do.
Section A asks students to match four bones – the skull, ribs, spine, and femur – to their jobs from a box (A-D). Items 1-4 name the bones and items 5-8 describe the same bones a different way, so students apply each job twice. The reference box teaches the skeleton’s three jobs, and the page-2 box gives the specific jobs (protects the brain; protects the heart and lungs; supports the body and protects the spinal cord; the longest bone, supports the leg).
Section B is short-answer. Students name the three jobs of the skeleton, identify which bones protect the heart and lungs, define a joint, and explain why a hard skull matters. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill is part of human-body science and complements the body-systems worksheet.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and point to your own skull, ribs, spine, and thigh bone.
Have students read the four bones and the A-D jobs, then match items 1-8.
Work Section A item 1 together: the skull protects the brain (A).
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Human Body Systems Worksheet or the Five Senses Worksheet for a human-body mini-unit.
