About this worksheet
Whether an object sinks or floats depends on how heavy it is for its size. An object lighter than the same amount of water floats; one heavier than that same amount of water sinks. Shape and trapped air also matter, which is why a foil boat floats but a foil ball sinks. This worksheet teaches students to predict and explain sinking and floating.
Section A gives eight objects (a wooden block; a steel nail) and asks students to write sink or float. The reference box teaches the idea with a cork and a coin example not reused in the items.
Section B asks students whether a light object sinks or floats, why shape changes the result, how trapped air helps, and to predict whether a full sealed bottle sinks. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill is part of the properties-of-matter strand.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and, if possible, test a few objects in a tub of water.
Complete Section A independently – have students think ‘light or heavy for its size?’
Work Section B item 9 together: decide what a light object does in water.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
