About this worksheet

Simple machines are everywhere in a classroom, a playground, and a house, but kids rarely have the vocabulary to name them. This worksheet gives students a clean set of six categories (lever, wheel and axle, pulley, inclined plane, wedge, screw), shows them the everyday tools that match each one, and locks down the why-it-helps idea: you use less force, but you move that force a longer distance.

Section A is an identify task. Eight common tools (a seesaw, a doorknob, a flagpole rope and wheel, a building ramp, a scissors blade, the base of a lightbulb, a crowbar, a bicycle wheel) are listed; students write which simple machine each one is. Two items repeat categories on purpose – both seesaw and crowbar are levers, both doorknob and bicycle wheel are wheel-and-axles – so students see the pattern, not a single example per category.

Section B opens up the discussion on page 2. Students count the six simple machines, name the fixed point of a lever, explain why a ramp is easier than a vertical lift, and give one example of a simple machine they have used today. The reference box at the top of page 1 defines all six categories in general terms but never uses any of the eight Section A examples as illustrations. Page 3 is a compact answer key.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box together; ask students to point at one example of each simple machine in the classroom.

Do Section A independently; review trickier items (crowbar = lever, lightbulb base = screw) as a class.

For Section B item 3, sketch a ramp on the board and label effort distance to anchor the trade-off idea.

Use as a pre-assessment before a build-it-yourself lever or pulley lab.
