Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
Earth has four seasons because it is tilted on its axis as it orbits the Sun. When your part of Earth tilts toward the Sun you get more direct sunlight and longer days (summer); when it tilts away you get less direct sunlight and shorter days (winter). This worksheet teaches the four seasons and, importantly, that the tilt – not distance from the Sun – is the cause.
Section A gives eight clues (the longest days, leaves changing color, your part of Earth tilting toward the Sun) and asks students to name the season, two clues per season. The reference box explains the tilt-and-orbit cause and flags the closer-to-the-Sun misconception, but the clues describe traits rather than repeating the reference word for word.
Section B is short-answer. Students explain what causes seasons, correct the distance misconception, reason about opposite seasons across the equator, and contrast summer and winter daylight. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill connects to the Earth-Sun system and to weather.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and tilt a globe toward a lamp to model summer and winter.
Complete Section A independently – have students decide which way Earth tilts for each clue.
Discuss Section B item 2 (why distance is not the cause) to clear up the misconception.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Weather Worksheet or the Solar System Worksheet for an earth-and-space mini-unit.
