Reading Passage
The Four Seasons
Earth has four seasons: spring, summer, fall (autumn), and winter. The seasons change because Earth is tilted on its axis as it orbits the sun. Different parts of Earth receive different amounts of sunlight at different times of year, which is what causes the seasons to change.
In spring, temperatures warm up and plants begin to grow again. Many animals have babies in spring. In summer, days are long and temperatures are warmest. Plants grow quickly and many fruits ripen. In fall, days get shorter, temperatures cool, and leaves on many trees change color and drop. In winter, days are short and temperatures are coldest. In many places, it snows.
Knowing the seasons helps us understand changes in weather, plant growth, and animal behavior throughout the year.
