About this worksheet
The scientific method is the spine of every grades 3-5 science fair, lab activity, and observation journal. Students who can name the steps and know which step they are on while working through a real experiment do better on every science task that comes after. This worksheet locks in both the step names and the order they always come in.
Section A gives eight short descriptions of what a student-scientist just did — Maria wrote ‘I think seeds will sprout faster in warm soil,’ Liam wondered why leaves change color, Theo set up matched pots with only temperature changed. Students write which step (ask a question, research, form a hypothesis, plan and do an experiment, record and analyze, write a conclusion) the action belongs to. Section B introduces the vocabulary every standardized test asks about — independent variable, dependent variable, fair test — plus three short transfer questions about hypotheses that are not supported, the order of research and hypothesis, and why reproducible results matter.
The reference box at the top of page 1 lists the six steps with a one-line concept summary each. It does not name any of the specific scenarios from Section A and does not use the words ‘variable’ or ‘fair test,’ so Section B measures independent recall rather than copying from the reference. Page 3 is a compact one-column answer key.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and have students name something they have wondered about — that is step 1 of the method.
Have students complete Section A independently as a step-matching warm-up.
Read item 4 together and discuss why changing only one thing at a time makes an experiment fair.
Have students finish Section B and check answers against the page 3 key.
Pair with the Force and Motion Worksheet or the Plant Life Cycle Worksheet — both topics give natural science-fair experiment ideas.
