Reading Passage

Salamanders

Salamanders are amphibians that resemble lizards in shape but are quite different — they are closely related to frogs and have smooth, moist skin without scales. There are more than 700 species of salamanders worldwide, found on every continent except Australia and Antarctica, with the greatest diversity in the Appalachian Mountains of eastern North America. They range in size from tiny species less than an inch long to the giant Chinese salamander, which can reach nearly six feet.

Salamanders are unusual among vertebrates in their ability to breathe through their skin. Their thin, moist skin must remain damp for gas exchange to occur, which is why most salamanders live in wet environments — under logs, in leaf litter, along stream banks, and in ponds. Some species have fully aquatic life cycles; others spend most of their lives on land and return to water only to breed. A few lungless salamanders breathe entirely through their skin and the lining of their mouths.

One of the most remarkable abilities of salamanders is limb regeneration. If a salamander loses a leg to a predator, it can regrow not just the skin but the complete limb including bones, muscles, nerves, and blood vessels. Some species can also regenerate parts of their hearts and eyes. Scientists study salamander regeneration to understand how tissues grow and repair, with potential implications for human medicine.

Salamanders play important roles in forest and freshwater ecosystems. They are predators of insects, worms, and small invertebrates, and are themselves prey for birds, snakes, and small mammals. Because their permeable skin makes them highly sensitive to pollution, temperature changes, and disease, salamanders are considered bioindicators — their health and population size reflect the health of the ecosystem. Many salamander species are threatened by habitat loss, climate change, and a deadly fungal disease called chytridiomycosis.
