Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Light can do two special things. Reflection is when light bounces off a surface, like a ball off a wall; smooth, shiny surfaces reflect light well, so we can see ourselves in them. Refraction is when light bends as it passes from one material into another, such as from air into water. This worksheet teaches students to tell the two behaviors apart.

Section A gives eight examples (your face in a still pond; a pencil that looks bent in water) and asks students to write reflection or refraction. The reference box teaches the idea with a mirror and a straw in water, examples not reused in the items.

Section B asks students to explain the difference, why a mirror shows your face, why a straw looks bent in water, and which surface reflects light best. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill extends the study of light.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and demonstrate with a mirror and a cup of water if possible.

Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘is the light bouncing or bending?’

Work Section B item 9 together: state the difference in one sentence.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.

Pair with the Light Worksheet or the Sound Worksheet for a physical-science mini-unit.
