Reflection and Absorption of Sound
Sound travels as a wave through the air and other materials. When a sound wave hits a surface, one of two things can happen: the wave can bounce back, or it can be absorbed by the material it strikes. Whether sound reflects or is absorbed depends largely on the type of surface the wave encounters.
Reflection of sound occurs when sound waves bounce off a hard, smooth surface. Just like light bouncing off a mirror, sound waves that strike a flat, rigid surface — such as a concrete wall, a cliff face, or a large building — bounce back in a predictable direction. The reflected sound wave that we hear is called an echo. Echoes are most clearly heard when there is a large, hard surface some distance away and the environment is otherwise quiet.
The distance between you and a reflecting surface affects what you hear. If the surface is very close, the reflected sound returns so quickly that it blends with the original sound, making it seem louder or prolonged. This effect is called reverberation. Concert halls and theaters are carefully designed to control reverberation — too much makes speech hard to understand, while just the right amount makes music sound rich and full.
Absorption of sound occurs when a surface or material takes in sound energy rather than bouncing it back. Soft, porous materials — such as carpet, curtains, foam panels, and upholstered furniture — absorb sound waves. The energy of the sound wave is converted into a tiny amount of heat energy inside the material. This is why a room with carpet and soft furnishings feels quieter than an empty room with bare walls and floors.
Sound engineers use their knowledge of reflection and absorption when designing recording studios, concert halls, classrooms, and offices. Acoustic panels made of foam or fabric are used to absorb unwanted echoes and reduce background noise. Hard surfaces like glass and concrete are avoided in places where clear, undistorted sound is needed. Understanding how sound interacts with different surfaces is an important part of architecture and acoustics.
