About this worksheet
A climograph is the standard way a geographer or an earth scientist shows a place’s climate, and it is also the figure students most often misread: it carries two measurements in two units on two scales, and the usual mistake is answering a rainfall question off the temperature axis.
The graph on page one shows twelve months for one place. Section A asks for the warmest and coolest months, the wettest and driest, and two comparisons that need both scales. Section B asks students to describe the yearly pattern in their own words and to explain why a climate graph shows averages rather than one year’s weather.
Every value on the figure is generated from the same numbers the answer key is built from, so a keyed answer cannot disagree with the picture. Page three is a complete answer key.
How to Use This Lesson
Print the worksheet. Page one carries the climate graph and Section A.
Point out that the bars and the line use different scales before starting.
Have students complete Section A, then Section B in writing.
Grade with the answer key on page three.
