Raptors — Reading Comprehension Lesson

Raptors are birds of prey — predatory birds that hunt and feed on other animals. They are characterized by sharp, hooked beaks for tearing flesh, powerful talons for gripping and killing prey, and exceptional eyesight. Raptors include eagles, hawks, falcons, ospreys, owls, and vultures. They are found on every continent except Antarctica and occupy nearly every type of habitat, from arctic tundra to tropical rainforest.

Raptor vision is extraordinary. Most raptors can see four to eight times more sharply than humans, and many can detect ultraviolet light that is invisible to us. A red-tailed hawk soaring high above a field can spot a mouse in the grass below. Eagles have two foveas — areas of extreme visual acuity — in each eye, allowing them to focus on prey both straight ahead and to the side simultaneously.

Different raptors have evolved distinct hunting strategies. Peregrine falcons are the fastest animals on Earth, diving at over 240 miles per hour to strike birds in midair. Ospreys dive feet-first into water to snatch fish with reversible outer toes and spiny foot pads for grip. Owls hunt silently at night using feathers with soft, fringed edges that muffle sound. Harris’s hawks are unusual among raptors — they hunt cooperatively in family groups, surrounding prey and flushing it from hiding.

Raptors play a vital role in ecosystems as top predators and scavengers. They control populations of rodents, rabbits, and other prey animals. Vultures, classified as raptors, clean up carrion and help prevent the spread of disease. Many raptor species faced severe population declines in the 20th century due to the pesticide DDT, which caused eggshells to thin and break. Banning DDT and conservation efforts have allowed species like the bald eagle and peregrine falcon to recover dramatically.
