Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Earth’s crust is broken into large slabs called tectonic plates that move slowly on the hot mantle below. Where the plates meet, they push together, pull apart, or slide past each other – and that movement builds mountains and causes most earthquakes and volcanoes. This worksheet helps students name the plates, the layers, and the three boundary types.

Section A on page 1 gives eight clues, and students write the plate-tectonics term each one describes. The reference box defines tectonic plates, the crust, the mantle, plate boundaries, faults, and the convergent, divergent, and transform boundary types.

Section B on page 2 asks what makes plates move, how divergent and convergent boundaries differ, two events plate movement can cause, and why earthquakes cluster near boundaries. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The worksheet pairs well with the Volcanoes, Earthquakes, and Layers of the Earth worksheets.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and trace how the moving mantle pushes the plates.

Complete Section A independently – have students match each clue to one term.

Discuss the three boundary types and an example event for each.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.

Pair with the Volcanoes Worksheet or the Earthquakes Worksheet.
