How Plants Adapt to the Environment
Plants live in nearly every environment on Earth — from scorching deserts to frozen tundra, from deep ocean floors to high mountain peaks. Each environment presents different challenges for survival. Plants have developed adaptations — special features or behaviors — that help them survive in the specific conditions of their habitat. These adaptations have developed over thousands of years of evolution.
Desert plants face a constant challenge: surviving with very little water. The cactus is a well-known example of a desert plant. Cacti have thick, waxy stems that store water, and they have spines instead of leaves to reduce water loss. Their roots spread wide and shallow to collect rainwater quickly before it evaporates. Some desert plants drop their leaves during dry seasons and grow new ones only after rain.
Rainforest plants face a different challenge — getting enough sunlight in a dense forest canopy. Many rainforest plants have large, broad leaves to capture as much light as possible. Some plants grow on the branches of tall trees to get closer to the sunlight. Others, like vines, climb up trees to reach the light above the dense undergrowth.
Plants in cold climates have adaptations for surviving freezing temperatures and long winters. Evergreen trees keep their needle-like leaves year-round. The waxy coating on their needles reduces water loss and helps them survive cold, dry winters. Many flowering plants in cold climates survive winter as seeds or underground bulbs and bloom quickly during the short warm season.
Wetland plants live in soggy, oxygen-poor soil. Some wetland plants, like mangroves, have special roots that grow up above the water to absorb air. Water lilies float on the surface so their leaves can access sunlight and air. Carnivorous plants like the Venus flytrap live in nutrient-poor wetland soils — they catch and digest insects to get the nitrogen they need to grow.
