About this worksheet
Plants are the easiest living thing for young students to observe over time, which makes the plant life cycle a perfect introduction to life science. This worksheet covers the five stages from seed to new seeds, plus the key role of pollination and the parts of a plant.
Section A uses an apple tree to make the abstract idea of a life cycle concrete. Students name each stage in order (seed, germination, seedling, mature plant, new seeds) and explain what bees and the apple itself do in the cycle. Section B steps back to the basic plant parts — roots, stem, leaves, flower — and what plants need to thrive.
The reference box at the top of page 1 numbers the five stages and uses a tomato plant as the model. Page 3 is a single-column answer key sized for the longer life-cycle answers.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and have students name a plant they have seen growing.
Work Section A independently and discuss item 6 (ordering the stages) as a class.
Move to Section B and have students label the parts of a plant on a sketch as a quick extension.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or aide spot-check.
Pair with the States of Matter Worksheet or the Animal Habitats Worksheet for a complete science set.
