About this worksheet
Every living thing is made of cells, and each cell has parts that do specific jobs. This worksheet teaches the main cell parts – the cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, and mitochondria that all cells share, plus the cell wall, chloroplasts, and large vacuole that make plant cells different from animal cells.
Page 1 shows a labeled diagram of an animal cell – the cell membrane, nucleus, mitochondria, and cytoplasm – above a reference box that names and explains every part, including the cell wall and chloroplasts that are unique to plant cells and the large vacuole that is especially prominent in them.
Section A on page 2 gives eight clues, and students write the cell part each one describes, using the diagram and the parts list. Section B on page 3 asks which two parts a plant cell has that an animal cell does not, why the nucleus matters, what the cell membrane does, and why a cell needs mitochondria. Page 4 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The worksheet pairs well with the Microorganisms and Human Body Systems worksheets.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and point out which parts are shared and which are plant-only.
Complete Section A independently – have students match each clue to one cell part.
Discuss why plant cells need a cell wall and chloroplasts but animal cells do not.
Use the answer key on page 4 for self-check.
Pair with the Microorganisms Worksheet or the Photosynthesis Worksheet.
