About this worksheet
Light is a topic students see every second of every day but rarely have language for. This worksheet pins the topic to three sharp distinctions — reflect, refract, absorb — and then asks students to recognize each one in everyday situations they have already noticed.
Section A is a classify task. Eight scenarios are listed: a flat mirror bouncing light, a pencil looking bent in water, a black shirt warming in the sun, sunlight bending through a water droplet, light bouncing off a calm lake, dark asphalt heating up on a sunny day, a swimming-pool floor looking closer than it is, and a face visible in a polished metal spoon. For each, students write reflect, refract, or absorb.
Section B opens up the discussion. Four short-response items ask students to explain why the Sun is the main light source on Earth, what a shadow tells us about how light travels, why white t-shirts stay cooler than black ones, and why you can see your own face in a window at night but not in the day. The reference box at the top of page 1 teaches each of the three actions at concept level only, without using any of the specific Section A scenarios. Page 2 is a compact answer key.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box together; if a flashlight and a glass of water are handy, demonstrate one reflect and one refract example so students see both.
Do Section A independently; encourage students to ask ‘did the light bounce, bend, or get taken in?’ on each item.
Discuss Section B item 4 as a class so the daylight-overpowers-reflection idea is heard out loud.
Pair with the Sound Worksheet, Magnets Worksheet, or Electricity Worksheet to keep physical-science thinking going.
Use the worksheet as a pre-assessment for a mirror-and-water-glass refraction lab the following day.
