Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

A physical change alters how something looks – its shape, size, or state – without making a new substance, while a chemical change produces a brand-new substance, often shown by a new color, smell, gas, or heat. This worksheet helps students tell the two apart, a foundational idea in the study of matter.

Section A gives eight changes (Ice melting into water; Wood burning in a campfire) and asks students to label each physical or chemical. The reference box teaches the idea with dissolving sugar and frying an egg, examples not reused in the items.

Section B asks students to contrast the two kinds of change, name a sign of a chemical change, classify slicing an apple with a reason, and give a chemical change they have seen. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds toward understanding states of matter and chemical reactions.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and ask after each example ‘has a new substance formed?’

Complete Section A independently – have students decide new look versus new substance.

Work Section B item 11 together: explain why slicing an apple is a physical change.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.

Pair with the Changes of State Worksheet or the Mixtures and Solutions Worksheet for a matter mini-unit.
