About this worksheet
A natural resource is something from nature that people use. Renewable resources – sunlight, wind, moving water, trees – can be replaced within a human lifetime, so they will not run out if used wisely. Nonrenewable resources – coal, oil, natural gas, minerals – take millions of years to form, so once used up they are gone for a very long time. This worksheet teaches the difference and why conservation matters.
Section A lists eight resources (sunlight, coal, wind, oil, trees, natural gas, river water, minerals) and asks students to label each renewable or nonrenewable, balanced four and four. The reference box defines both categories and conservation but names none of the eight Section A resources.
Section B is short-answer. Students contrast renewable and nonrenewable, explain why conservation matters, name two renewable sources of electricity, and give a way to conserve at home. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill links earth science to environmental responsibility.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and ask students to suggest one renewable and one nonrenewable resource.
Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘can nature make more of this in my lifetime?’
Discuss Section B item 4 (ways to conserve at home) as a class brainstorm.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Erosion Worksheet or the Water Cycle Worksheet for an earth-science mini-unit.
