Reading Passage
Muscle Stretching
Stretching is an important part of physical fitness that helps keep muscles flexible, strong, and healthy. When muscles are flexible, they can move joints through their full range of motion, which makes everyday activities easier and reduces the risk of injury.
There are two main types of stretching. Static stretching involves holding a stretch in one position for a period of time, usually 15 to 30 seconds. Dynamic stretching involves moving a body part through a full range of motion in a controlled, smooth way.
Muscles are made up of bundles of fibers. When you stretch, you gently lengthen these fibers, which helps them stay pliable and reduces stiffness. Regular stretching also improves circulation, bringing more blood and oxygen to muscle tissue.
It is important to warm up before stretching. Stretching cold muscles can cause strains or tears. A light five-minute walk or jog raises body temperature and prepares muscles for deeper stretching.
Stretching after exercise — during the cool-down phase — is especially beneficial. At this point, muscles are warm and more receptive to lengthening. Regular post-exercise stretching has been shown to reduce muscle soreness and improve long-term flexibility.
