About this worksheet

The Moon does not make its own light – it reflects sunlight, and as it orbits Earth about once a month we see different amounts of its lit half. Those shapes are the eight phases, from new moon through the crescents, quarters, gibbous shapes, and full moon. This worksheet builds the vocabulary and the cause-and-effect reasoning students need before they ever look at a phase diagram.

Section A gives eight descriptions and asks students to name the phase each one describes – no lit part at all (new moon), the entire face lit (full moon), exactly the right half lit and growing (first quarter), and so on across all eight phases. Because the clues describe appearance rather than repeating the reference definitions word for word, students reason from the shape, not from memorized text. The reference box teaches the cause and lists the phases in order.

Section B is short-answer on page 2. Students explain why the Moon changes shape, distinguish waxing from waning, recall how long the cycle takes, and reason about a growing crescent. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill sets up later work on eclipses and the Earth-Moon-Sun system.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and trace the eight phases in order on a board or phase wheel.

Complete Section A independently – have students decide waxing or waning first, then the exact phase.

Discuss Section B item 4 (a growing crescent) to reinforce that growing means waxing.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.

Pair with the Solar System Worksheet or the Tides Worksheet for an earth-and-space mini-unit.
