Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
When you combine materials you get a mixture or a solution. In a mixture, each material keeps its own properties and you can usually separate the parts again; in a solution, one material dissolves completely and evenly into another so you can no longer see the separate parts. This worksheet teaches the difference with everyday examples.
Section A lists eight combinations (trail mix, salt dissolved in water, a salad, sugar in tea, sand and pebbles) and asks students to label each mixture or solution, balanced four and four. The reference box defines both with cereal-and-milk and sugar-in-water examples but names none of the eight Section A items.
Section B is short-answer. Students contrast a mixture and a solution, describe separating a sand-and-pebble mixture, explain why salt water is a solution, and name a kitchen solution. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds on states of matter and material properties.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and demonstrate stirring sugar into water until it disappears.
Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘can I still see and separate the parts?’
Discuss Section B item 2 (separating sand from pebbles) to introduce separation methods.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the States of Matter Worksheet or the Properties of Materials Worksheet for a physical-science mini-unit.
