About this worksheet

A child who can already name a cat and a car has everything needed to make the first sorting decision in life science: one of them grows, eats and drinks, and one does not. This sheet asks for that decision on twelve pictures and never asks for a word to be read.

The reference box says plainly that plants are living too, because that is the part children argue with — a tree stays where it is put and still counts. Both the tree and the flower are on the page for that reason.

Section A gives six pictures and a two-word bank. Section B is a cut-and-paste sort with two labeled boxes and eight tiles, four for each box, so the counts never give the sort away. The answer key on page three names every picture beside its group.

How to Use This Lesson

Print the worksheet. The word bank is in the box on page one.

Read the two group words aloud together before students begin.

For Section B, cut the tiles apart along the dashed lines first.

Check the answers against page three.
