About this worksheet
The layers of the Earth are a building-block topic for almost everything else in earth science. Volcanoes, earthquakes, and the rock cycle all depend on the same simple picture: a thin crust over a hot mantle over a metal core. This worksheet pins that picture down with four named layers, their state of matter, and what each is made of, then asks students to use the picture to interpret clues.
Section A is a recall-and-classify task. Eight short clues – some about a single specific feature (continents and ocean floor / about as hot as the Sun’s surface), some about position (outermost / just beneath the crust), and some about state of matter (liquid metal / solid metal at the center) – prompt the student to write which of the four layers the clue describes. The mix means a student who has memorized only one fact per layer will get stuck.
Section B opens up the reasoning on page 2. Students list the four layers in order from outside in, explain the liquid-outer-core / solid-inner-core distinction (and the role of pressure), describe why the mantle is unreachable, and identify which two layers together make up the core. The reference box at the top of page 1 defines each layer but does not write the Section A clues word-for-word, so the worksheet stays reference-independent. Page 3 is a compact answer key.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box together; have students sketch a quick four-layer cross-section in their notebook before they start Section A.
Do Section A independently; review the liquid-outer-core / solid-inner-core pair as a class because the pressure-keeps-it-solid concept is counterintuitive.
For Section B item 3, accept any answer that names the mantle’s depth, heat, or both as the reason it is unreachable.
Pair with the Volcanoes Worksheet or the Earthquakes Worksheet to show that activity at the surface comes from the layers below.
Use as a pre-assessment before a deep dive into plate tectonics.
