Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
An insect is a small animal with three body parts – head, thorax, and abdomen – and exactly six legs; most also have antennae and wings. Not every small crawling creature is an insect: a spider has eight legs and two body parts, and a worm has none. This worksheet teaches the insect body plan and the count-the-parts test.
Section A lists eight creatures with their key traits (an ant with six legs and three body parts; a spider with eight legs; an earthworm with no legs) and asks students to label each insect or not an insect. The set includes the classic non-insects (spider, worm, snail) so students apply the test. The reference box teaches the traits but names none of the eight creatures.
Section B is short-answer. Students name the three body parts, recall the six legs, explain why a spider is not an insect, and state the two things to count. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill supports animal classification and observation.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and name the head, thorax, and abdomen on a picture of an insect.
Complete Section A independently – have students count body parts and legs for each creature.
Discuss the non-insects (spider, earthworm, snail) and why each fails the test.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Animal Classification Worksheet or the Animal Adaptations Worksheet for a life-science mini-unit.
