About this worksheet
The eight planets of our solar system fall into two groups with very different features. This worksheet teaches the small, rocky inner planets and the huge, gassy outer planets, plus the asteroid belt between them and the orbits they all follow around the Sun.
The reference box and Section A are on page 1. The reference box names both groups and defines terms like terrestrial, gas giants, and the asteroid belt. Section A has eight clues to match to the correct term. Section B on page 2 has four short-response questions comparing the groups and naming the outer planets.
Page 3 is a complete answer key with the term for every clue and sample short answers. The worksheet pairs well with the Solar System and Rotation and Revolution worksheets.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box and review the two groups of planets.
Match each clue in Section A on page 1 to the correct term.
Answer the four short-response questions in Section B on page 2.
